Invention Convention

by Lori Schluntz

March 27, 2008

On Monday, March 3, approximately 130 students from Alma, Cambridge, Franklin, Minden, and Wilcox-Hildreth participated in ESU #11’s “17th Annual Invention Convention” held at Pioneer Village. 46 inventors from East Elementary and C.L. Jones did an excellent job representing Minden at the convention!
Judges evaluated each invention in the following areas: creativity, usefulness, appeal to intended audiences, and quality of presentation, both oral and visual.

Drew Hultquist and Zach Reichstein’s “Lighted Gate Tool,” a device used to make irrigating in the dark easier, earned 2nd place in the 3rd grade division. The 3rd place award went to the team of Aurora Fowler and Matty Hoskins with their invention called “The Milk Blaster,” which makes it easier for young children to pour their own milk.
In the 4th grade division, Bryce Erdman earned 2nd place with his “Easy Load Toothbrush”, a toothbrush with the toothpaste attached so that it comes up through the bristles of the brush. Kailin Nielsen and Lily Steen’s “Crutch Caddy,” an invention that stores crutches when they are not being used so that people don’t trip over them, won the 3rd place ribbon.

Reid Yelken earned top honors in the 6th grade division with his “Faster Fire Escape,” a portable system that quickly lowers people out of upper level windows to safety. As a 1st place winner, Reid also earned the opportunity to send his invention on to the “Invent America” national competition.
All of this year’s inventors should definitely be commended for their hard work, creativity, and wonderful ideas! Congratulations on a job well done!
