“All students will improve their language skills—especially in the areas of reading and writing.” This statement expresses the goal of the Minden Public Schools for the next cycle of School Improvement, 2008-2013.
School Improvement, a formal program mandated by the Nebraska Department of Education and by the North Central Association, requires school districts to identify one or more important academic goals. After examining data from the ITBS, PLAN, ACT, the Statewide Writing Assessment, and other sources, Minden’s School Improvement Committee decided to devote special attention to language skills.
“Language skills are the foundation of learning,” says Superintendent Melissa Wheelock, “and we want to ensure that all of our students have the language skills they need to succeed both in the classroom and in their chosen careers.”
“Improving reading and writing skills is not just the responsibility of language arts teachers,” notes Joe Green, chair of the School Improvement Committee. “All teachers—in every academic area, and at every grade level—must address this goal. Reading and writing instruction must be a priority throughout our entire district.”
During the next four years, the district will track standardized test and classroom data to assess progress toward its goal. Eventually, the district will submit a detailed report of results, and a team of outside educators will evaluate the district’s efforts. A report to the public will follow.
