On Monday, October 20th, Yang Yang presented World Geography students with an inside glimpse of China. Yang is a Chinese transfer student studying chemistry at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. During Monday’s classes, Yang presented students with information regarding China’s history, primary tourist attractions, and culture. After a brief slide show, students were given the opportunity to ask Yang questions. From these questions, students learned details about China’s culture. For example, students were thankful for American tradition when they learned that Chinese students go from an eight-hour day in elementary school to a fifteen-hour day in high school. Students also learned that McDonalds, Pizza Hut, and Kentucky Fried Chicken are considered fine restaurants in China—not mere sources of fast food.
Questions also delved into deeper matters with discussion on the Tibetan revolts, civil freedoms, and economic aspects of China.
Thanks to Yang’s willingness to give up part of his fall break, World Geography students at Minden High School were given a rare and in-depth understanding of the Chinese lifestyle and heritage. Yang will be returning to China in May to finish his education but hopes to return to the United States after graduation.
