McCook Invitational Comes Home With Whippets

by Steve Exstrom

September 04, 2008

The Minden girls’ golf team began the 2008 golf season by traveling to Heritage Hills golf course in McCook for their first invitational meet.  The weather was perfect and so was the play as Minden walked away with the team title firing a very impressive 398 for the day.  Lexington finished in the runner-up position shooting 421 followed by McCook with a 445.

Individually, Minden was paced by junior Allie Exstrom.  Allie shot very consistent rounds of 44 and 43 for an 87 meet total.  This score was good enough to garner her first invitational title and the gold medal as the meet medalist.  Laynee Woodward shot a very good score on the front nine with 45 and came back with a 51 to earn third place in the meet.  Morgan Kristensen shot 104 and placed sixth overall while her teammate, Heather Anderson medaled in her first varsity meet in 10th place while carding a 111.  Other Whippet players included Kylea Shelton firing a 113, Sara Hoyt shooting a 125, Kaile Geist with a 129, and Kaelyse Clapper finished with a 135.

“Overall the day was very successful for the team, commented Coach Steve Exstrom.  “Allie’s first place finish was very well deserved as she played very consistent golf all day long and the rest of the team played an extremely difficult course very well also.  I was very pleased to see Laynee Woodward get out to a fast start!  She will need to carry a lot of the team scoring load this year along with Allie, Morgan, and Kylea.  Heather Anderson shot a phenomenal score for her first time out.  She could factor in very nicely throughout the year.  Morgan played very steady golf but I know she was a little disappointed in her nines.  Morgan is very competitive and doesn’t like to shoot in the 50s.  I know she’ll be there for the team throughout the year as well.  Kylea struggled on a few holes but kept it together and finished strong.  Kylea has some mechanical issues to work on and when she gets them ironed out she will be shooting great scores also!  Sara Hoyt, Kaile Geist, and Kaelyse Clapper played JV for us and played very well for their first meet of the year.  I look for these girls to dramatically improve as the season unfolds.”
