MPS reaches tentative agreement in adult education contract with Minneapolis Federation of Teachers
Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT) and Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) have reached a tentative agreement regarding the adult education contract. Adult Education serves people ages 18 or older, and provides free English as a second language (ESL), GED/adult diploma, career & college prep and citizenship classes.
“We entered these negotiations with the goal of raising the pay of educators of adult students to the same levels as the other teachers in MPS. While we didn’t get all the way there, we’ve made good progress, and we’ve updated our contract to reflect the new ways students learn in this post-COVID world. I think our educators will be pleased,” said Nate Hart-Andersen, an adult education teacher and the MFT’s lead negotiator on the adult education contract. “We will be able to say more about the agreement once it has been presented to our members, who will vote on it next week.”
The Adult Education program at Minneapolis Public Schools comprises 55 contract and hourly teachers, and serves roughly 3,000 students every year. “We are excited that we’ve reached a tentative agreement with our adult educators and look forward to continued collaboration with MFT to ensure that our MPS adult education program attracts and retains passionate and committed staff to serve our adult students.” said Executive Director Aviva Hillenbrand, who leads Community Education at MPS.
