Armatage Principal Steve Searl wins MESPA Division Leadership Award

The Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association (MESPA) has announced that Steve Searl, principal of Armatage Elementary School, has received the 2025-26 Division Leadership Award for the Minneapolis Division.

The award recognizes principals who embody the spirit of collaboration and advocacy that supports and strengthens educational leadership across Minnesota.

“Steve Searl exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose, compassion, and vision,” said Michelle Krell, MESPA Executive Director. “His ability to foster growth not only in his school but among his peers makes him a powerful force for positive change in Minnesota education.”

Searl has led Armatage Elementary through a transformation from a Montessori Magnet to a thriving community school. Under his leadership, enrollment has grown by more than 70 students since the school’s transition five years ago.

“Working with the staff and families to create such a happy and healthy community school is a professional highlight for me,” Searl said. “It means a lot to me to be honored by MESPA with the Minneapolis Division Leadership Award. I am honored and privileged to work with the amazing elementary principals throughout Minneapolis Public Schools and have been fortunate to learn and grow as a school leader through our collegiality.”
