Celebrate Black History Month with MPS

MPS is hosting several events around the city as we celebrate Black History Month. Join us for these celebrations and look for more events hosted by your school communities.

"Exhaling" art exhibit gallery opening

Tuesday, Feb. 3
6–8 p.m.
Davis Center Gallery (1250 W Broadway Ave.)

All are welcome! Exhaling will showcase art by Anwatin, Bryn Mawr, FAIR, Las Estrellas and Washburn students, plus work from MPS staff including Franklin Middle School teacher Melodee Strong, Nagashia Jackson and Tikonwaun Blackamore, and community artist Sean Garrison. The exhibit will be open Feb. 2–28.

 


 

Minnesota Thursday with Rose McGee sweet potato pie

  • Thursday, Feb. 5
  • 9–10:30 a.m. at Hall STEM Academy
  • 10:55 a.m. at Lucy Laney

Rose McGee, founder of Minnesota-based non-profit Sweet Potato Comfort Pie, will visit schools to read her book "Can't Nobody Make Sweet Potato Pie like Our Mama!"

Students across MPS will enjoy a Minnesota Thursday meal served with McGee's sweet potato pie recipe!
 

 


 

National African American Family/Parent Involvement Day (NAAFID)

Look for NAAFID celebrations hosted by your school communities on Feb. 9 and throughout the month.

  • A NAAFID event for Bethune caregivers featuring a presentation on quilting.

 


 

"It Took Courage: The Eliza Winston Story" 

  • Tuesday, Feb. 10
  • 6:30–8 p.m.
  • Justice Page Middle School (1 West 49th St.)

Dr. Christopher Lehman will talk about his 2024 book called “It took Courage” at Justice Page Middle School on Feb. 10 from 6:30-8 p.m. The book is about a girl named Eliza's escape from enslavement while being kept by her enslavers on the shores of Lake Harriet and the Mississippi River. The event is free and all are welcome! RSVP here.

 


 

Our Health Matters

Join us for a panel on mental and physical health in the Black community featuring local healthcare professionals. Presented by MPS Mental Health Support Services. Refreshments provided and all are welcome! RSVP here.

A special National African American Family/Parent Involvement Day event for caregivers and family at Sullivan STEAM School.

All are welcome to learn about MPS schools that are named to honor iconic Black women in American history, presented by MPS students from Bethune Arts, Lucy Laney, Nellie Stone Johnson and more TBA.
