MPS places tech levy question before voters on November ballot
The Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) School Board approved a technology levy ballot question that will seek $20 million in additional annual tech funding from Minneapolis taxpayers this fall.

If approved, the tech levy would not significantly increase the amount of money MPS spends on technology beyond typical staffing and other cost increases or add new technology initiatives, rather it would minimize cuts to other MPS areas by allowing the general funds currently spent on technology to be used for other programs and services.
Like school districts across the state and country, MPS faces continued budget challenges despite tightening its budget and getting more revenue from the state. This is because of increased costs in areas like salaries and transportation, chronic underfunding of programs like special education and English learner services, and declining student enrollment.
“Raising revenue through this technology levy is just one way MPS is working to stabilize its financial situation and ensure a secure future for all students,” said MPS Senior Finance Officer Ibrahima Diop. “If the levy increase is not approved, MPS will have to make further reductions to resources, programs and support which are critical for our students.”
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, with early voting options available. Voters can check their registration status, register to vote, view a sample ballot and find their polling places on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website.
