MPS reminds voters about tech levy question on election ballot
Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) reminds voters in the city to make their voices heard tomorrow on Election Day and consider a technology levy on the ballot. MPS is seeking $20 million in additional annual tech funding from Minneapolis taxpayers.
If approved, the tech levy would not significantly increase the amount of money MPS spends on technology beyond typical staffing and other cost increases or add new technology initiatives. Rather, it would minimize cuts to other MPS areas by allowing the general funds currently spent on technology to be used for other programs and services.
Like school districts across the state and country, MPS faces continued budget challenges despite tightening its budget and getting more revenue from the state. This is because of increased costs in areas like salaries and transportation, chronic underfunding of programs like special education and English learner services, and multiple years of declining student enrollment.
“Deciding on candidates for president and other offices is not the only important decision Minneapolis voters have to make tomorrow,” said MPS Senior Finance Officer Ibrahima Diop. “Voters also need to consider this technology levy question. It’s just one way MPS is working to raise revenue, stabilize its financial situation and ensure a secure future for all students.”
