MPS rolls out adapted vehicle program helping students experience independent mobility
Students with disabilities are experiencing independent movement, some for the first time, thanks to customized electric toy Jeeps. MPS and Special Olympics Minnesota have teamed up to create a fleet of adapted cars for students ages 3-5.
Volunteer Richard Parnell engineered the vehicles, spending 200 hours customizing each car to meet the needs of individual students. A total of ten vehicles will be modified and used by early childhood special education programs across the MPS.
Two years in development at MPS, the program was launched at an event at Lucy Laney Elementary on Friday, Jan. 19. Local media attended the event last week: watch stories from WCCO and FOX 9.
