MPS athletes shine at state tournaments; Reymie Keenan wins second state wrestling title

MPS student‑athletes delivered outstanding performances at the Minnesota State High School League State Wrestling and Swimming & Diving tournaments.

Edison senior Reymie Keenan wins a second state title; North senior Johan Alcantara Lund finishes as state runner-up; Roosevelt senior Sam Hinman places fifth.

Wrestling

Congratulations to state champion wrestler Reymie Keenan, a senior at Edison High School –  Keenan won the title for the second year in a row in the 200-pound weight class! Senior Vito Lopez-Marsh added to Edison's success and wrapped up his wrestling career with his fourth state appearance, advancing to the top eight.

North High senior Johan “Yogi” Alcantara Lund placed second, improving on last year’s fifth-place finish and becoming the first Polar to reach the state finals since 1998. Teammate Bravo Niyonkuru also competed at the state tournament, wrestling a strong and competitive weekend.

Roosevelt’s Sam Hinman also made history, placing fifth at 136 pounds, becoming the school’s first female all‑state wrestler and its first wrestler to place in 26 years. Teddy teammates Elliott Weyandt and James Olvera finished in the top eight of their brackets, contributing to a strong overall performance for the Teddies, earning 10 total wins at the state meet. Teddies Kaleb Gau, Elliott Karol and Sam Weyandt also competed.

Camden High School’s Julian Kelly and Dakayo Lattimore also wrestled well at state. Lattimore has wrestled for two years and has qualified for state twice; this is Kelly's first year qualifying for the state tournament. South High junior Matthew O'Hara (section runner-up) earned his second trip to the state tournament. Southwest senior Antoine Golden also competed at state. Washburn's Isaiah Burdette (section champion) and Andrew Pryce (section runner-up) both advanced to state as well. Burdette went on to finish in the top eight, with is only losses coming to wrestlers who ultimately finished first and third in the tournament.

Swimming and Diving

In boys swimming and diving, Southwest finished 10th overall, the program’s highest placement ever in either Class AA or A!

The relay team of Jackson Jaglo, Noah Brennom, Roman Johnson and Ethan Holm placed fifth in both the 200- and 400‑yard freestyle relays, setting a new MPS record of 1:28.83 in the 200 free relay! Ethan Holm placed 8th and 14th in the 100 fly and the 200 free. Roman Johnson placed 10th in the 100 fly.

The boys TMT (Tigers-Millers-Teddies) team capped a great season as MPS and Tri-Metro Conference champions with Roosevelt’s Rowan Lesmeister making history. The Teddy senior took 14th place in the state 100 yard breaststroke, setting a new MPS Conference record of 58.91 seconds. The TMT 200 medley relay team of Ravi Elliott, Rowan Lesmeister, Leif Olson and Emery Taylor finished 21st with a time of 1:39.55, while the 400 freestyle relay team of Emery Taylor, Leif Olson, Finn Davies and Rowan Lesmeister placed 26th.

From historic wrestling milestones to record-setting swimming, MPS student-athletes continue to demonstrate talent at the highest levels of competition. Congratulations to all competitors, coaches and school communities.
