Student Homelessness Awareness Day and the Stable Homes Stable Schools program

Minneapolis Public Schools honors the legacy of Margo Hurrle, a 30-year MPS shelter coordinator who recognized the need to use the resources, talents and support of our community to address the root causes of homelessness.

In 2021, the City of Minneapolis proclaimed September 8 “Margo Hurrle Student Homelessness Awareness Day” in recognition of her great work.

Last year, MPS identified 3,250 students experiencing homelessness. About 20% of students in Minneapolis have at some point experienced homelessness, affecting their education and well-being.

We encourage everyone to recognize that many students do not have stable housing, that a lack of housing stability impacts education outcomes and that all students deserve safe, affordable housing.

The Margo Hurrle Scholarship Fund helps prevent homelessness and supports student participation in enrichment activities. Consider donating to this cause at https://www.ncjwmn.org/give/.

The fund is hosted by the National Council of Jewish Women in Minnesota and distributed by Minneapolis Public Schools. Please write “MPS Rapid Response Fund” in the comments box.
