Update on the July 28, 2026 School Board Business Meeting

 

MPS School Board meetings are a good source of information about the direction of MPS. This was the first meeting for the 2026-27 school year.  

Reports and Recommendations from the Superintendent

Dr. Sayles-Adams highlighted the following events, observances and acknowledgments:  

  • Thank you to the Extended Learning and Community Education teams for the innovative and engaging support they have provided our students and community this summer.
  • MPS had several outstanding students at the National History Day competition in College Park, Maryland:
    • Congratulations to Roosevelt’s Helen Collins and Sara Rosenthal who took first place in the senior group competition.
    • Congratulations to Justice Page’s Malai Walker who placed second in the Junior Individual Exhibit.
    • Other top finishers at the National History Day Competition include Sanford’s Amelia Donald, Millie Knox, Cullen Pilon, Zella Sanders and Olivia Wiger.
    • Congratulations to their social studies teachers Naomi Hornstein (Justice Page), Jenny Monroe (Sanford), and Joelle Stangler (Roosevelt) for their success at National History Day!
  • Congratulations to the national champion Washburn High School Girls Ultimate Frisbee team. In early June, the team traveled to Salem, Oregon, playing six games in two days to secure the national title. The Millers made history as the first team from Minnesota to be named champions.
  • The Washburn Boys Ultimate Frisbee team also capped off a great season with a 5th place finish at nationals. Congrats to the Miller Ultimate Frisbee teams on their historic seasons. 
  • Thank you to the Central Office and Operations teams (custodial services, maintenance, project managers and construction crews) that have been working tirelessly over the summer to ensure our educators and buildings are ready for the new school year.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 8 is the first day of school for grades 1-12 and Thursday, Sept. 10 is the first day for pre-kindergarteners and kindergarteners.

  • Resolution Amending Policy 6690, Wellness Policy (2026-0045)
  • Approval of the 2026-2027 e-learning day plan (2026-0057)
  • Approval of the 2026-2028 Non-Represented Employees Compensation Plan (2026-0058)  
  • 2026-2027 First Budget Amendment (2026-0060)
  • Resolution Authorizing Changes in the Contemplated Use of Bond Proceeds Under Applicable Minnesota Statutes (2026-0044)
  • Resolution Authorizing Negotiations for a Subsequent Superintendent Employment Contract (2026-0059)
  • Resolution Extending Equity and Diversity Impact Assessment (EDIA) Focus on Early Literacy for the 2026-2027 School Year (2026-0061)
  • Resolution Approving the Strategic Plan Prioritized Strategies for the 2026-27 School Year (2026-0062)
