Reports and Recommendations from the Superintendent

Dr. Sayles-Adams highlighted the following events, observances and acknowledgments:  

  • During the month of May, MPS celebrates and recognizes:

    • Asian American Heritage Month 

    • Jewish American Heritage Month

    • Minnesota American Indian Month 

    • Mental Health Awareness Month

  • MPS Indian Education Department invites you to celebrate Minnesota American Indian Month with their Honoring Our Youth H.E.R.O. Event on May 14 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the South High Practice Field. 

  • The Hmong Parent Advisory Council invites you to celebrate Asian American Heritage Month with their Hmong Heritage Night Celebration on Wednesday, May 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Davis Center.

  • During May special days and weeks celebrate the great work of many on the MPS team:

    • May 1 was Principal Appreciation Day and School Lunch Hero Day

    • Last week marked Teacher Appreciation Week 

    • May 6 was National School Nurse Day

    • May 8 was National School Communicators Day 

  • Congratulations to Lesley Earles, band specialist at Edison High School, and Laurie Meyers, choir specialist at South High School, on being named quarterfinalists for the 2027 Grammy Educator of the Year. 

  • The Athena Award celebrates outstanding senior female student-athletes who excel in sports and make a difference in their communities. Congrats to our 2026 Minneapolis Athena Award recipients:

    • Kamaria Jordan, Camden

    • Reymie Keenan, Edison

    • Talylah Johnson, North

    • Brooklyn Erickson, Roosevelt

    • Maggie Osgood, South

    • Annika Midness, Southwest

    • Parker Stob, Washburn

  • The Davis Center Gallery is showcasing the Viva City Middle School Art Exhibition. Visit Transition Plus for their Semi-annual Student Art Sale Extravaganza on Friday, May 15 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the MPS Center for Adult Learning.

  • Early Childhood Special Education’s Annual Free Sale is happening this Saturday, May 16 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wilder.

  • Out4Good’s - School’s Out, Come Out, Cook Out! is happening on May 18 at the Davis Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All students, staff and families are welcome to join this celebration. 

  • The MPS Special Education Resource Fair is next Thursday, May 21 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Davis Center. 

  • Emerson’s Centennial Celebration on Friday, May 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Emerson Dual Language Elementary.

  • Graduation ceremonies take place in the coming weeks. Congratulations to the Class of 2026 for their hard work!

 

presentation with updates on the Anishinabe Academy Facility and School Transformation processes were provided. 

 

A first reading of the proposed Fiscal Year 2026-27 Budget and Capital Plan and Budget were conducted. 

 

Policy Committee Report

 

The board had a discussion of potential updated public comment guidelines

 

Action Items

 

The board approved the following items:

  • Consent Agenda (all items under 7a)

  • Resolution Amending Policy 5635 (Mandated Reporting Of Child Neglect Or Physical Or Sexual Abuse) (2026-0037)

  • Resolution Adopting Policy 4018 (Minnesota Paid Leave) (2026-0020)

  • Approval of the 2025-2027 Bargaining Agreement between MPS and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 284, for custodial and certain physical plant and facilities employees (2026-0043)
