Update on the June 9, 2026 MPS School Board Regular Business Meeting

MPS School Board meetings are a good source of information about the direction of MPS. We hope you find this brief overview of key meeting items helpful.  

This was the last board meeting for the 2025-26 school year. The first meeting for the 2026-27 school year will be on July 28.  

Recognitions

The Board honored the following student accomplishments: 

• Congratulations to North High’s Saye Monibah Jr! Saye is the Class A state champion in the 200-meter dash, where he set a new state record with an incredible time of 21.38 seconds. In addition, he earned a silver medal in the 100-meter dash. 
• Congratulations to the Roosevelt Adapted Bowling Team, who won their first-ever adapted bowling state championship in the team competition! The winning team includes Mariah Artis, Raul Solano-Valentin, Ethan Awe and Loki Torkleson. 
• Congratulations to the Southwest High School Unified Soccer Team who captured the Division B championship at the 2026 Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools State Soccer Tournament. 

Reports and Recommendations from the Superintendent

Dr. Sayles-Adams highlighted the following events, observances and acknowledgments:  

• During the month of June, MPS invites you to celebrate Pride Month. You can participate and represent MPS in one of the many community Pride events.  
• On June 19, MPS will join the nation in recognizing Juneteenth. Please note that the district will be closed in observance of this day.
• Minnesota Somali Week will be held July 1-7. 
• July 4 is Independence Day. The district will be closed July 3 in observance of this day.
• Congratulations to James Ellis, English teacher at Olson Middle School. Mr. Ellis was recently named a Fox9 Top Teacher!
• Congratulations to Camden’s Mark Heiser. Last month he added Minnesota Vikings’ Girls Flag Football Coach of the Week to his list of accomplishments. 
• The Davis Center gallery is exhibiting a mural created by Justice Page students in collaboration with students from Uppsala, Sweden. The mural will next go to the Swedish Institute on June 20 and the Sister City Celebration at Nicollet Island on July 19. 

A presentation providing an update on the Strategic Plan and the K-5 English Language Arts (ELA) Knowledge Building Curriculum Update was given.

The board conducted a first reading of recommended changes Policy 6690 (Wellness Policy).

• Resolution approving the parameters and process for the next phase of MPS School Transformation (2026-0050) 
• Resolution Approving the District's Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Second Budget Amendment (2026-0046) 
• Resolution Approving the 2026-2027 Budget (2026-0036)
• Resolution Approving the Fiscal Year 2027 Capital Plan, Budget and Bonding (2026-0039)
• Resolution Relating to General Obligation Long-Term Facilities Maintenance Bonds; Declaring Intent to Issue Bonds To Finance A Facilities Plan; Providing for Approval of the Plan and Bonds By The Board and The Commissioner of Education; And Authorizing the Publication of Notice (2026-0038)
• Adopting a Language Access Plan (2026-0048) 
• Resolution Updating Expectations and Guidelines for Public Comments During Board Meetings (2026-0056)
