Why Choose GEMS (Girls in Engineering and Math) & GISE (Guys in Science and Engineering)?

GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science)-GISE (Guys in Science and Engineering) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Academy helps students uncover the wonders of STEM fields in a four-week, all-day program.

Choose the GEMS-GISE-STEM Academy 4 week program at Sullivan or the GEMS-GISE STEM Blast Academy 1-3 week program at Sullivan, affording your family flexibility and choice!

Students participate in project-based and problem-based learning, using a hands-on and minds-on approach that integrates the skills of reading and math. Knowledgeable staff help immerse students in high-interest and rigorous STEM experiences designed to provide relevant, real-world connections and career explorations. Students have the option of participating in GEMS, GISE or combined groups. Students entering grades 1-8 are eligible to participate.

Example courses for different grades include:

  • Skateboard Science (5-8)
  • Engineering the Ride (5-8)
  • Journalism (5-8)
  • Everest Trek (5-8)

The GEMS-GISE STEM Academy will have an option for students that are only able to join us this summer for a week or two at Sullivan!

  • Middle School STEM Blasts are one-week Academies in which students immerse and engage in course based, camp like experiences.   Sullivan STEM Blast begins July 5th.  
  • STEM Blast courses are held the weeks of:
    • Stay tuned for identified weeks for Sullivan
  • 6.5 hours just like the full Middle STEM Academy Summer Experience.

American Indian STEAM Program for Incoming 5th GradersRegistering for the American STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) program as an incoming 5th grader only?  Please visit our elementary GEMS-GISE STEM Academy website to apply.  There will be a separate Register Now-American Indian STEAM Program tab.  Math and reading will occur within this program. 

Program Description:  American Indian STEAM Experience enhances students’ knowledge of the unique heritage of American Indian Nations found in Minnesota. This course emphasizes Indigenous ways of knowing and learning in the past and present while also exploring American Indian contributions to science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Topics include: Ojibwe and Dakota language and vocabulary; culture-based stories and oral histories; Indigenous star knowledge; methods for keeping count; traditional and contemporary art; and various engineering and design activities. This course is the entire day. This course is offered at Anishinabe/Sullivan only.
