American Indian Awareness & Family Involvement Week

American Indian Awareness & Family Involvement Week, is scheduled for November 17 - 21, 2025. 
 

American Indian Awareness & Family Involvement Week is a week-long initiative for Minneapolis Public Schools celebrating, recognizing and raising awareness of American Indian people & culture. Minneapolis has a vibrant American Indian community and we have much pride serving over 1800 American Indian students across the district in more than 100 schools. All MPS schools are invited to join us in Indian Education to recognize our American Indian population by intentionally engaging our students, families and community during this week while also exploring activities that allow all students to learn about Indigenous populations. Curious about what your school has planned? Or have a great idea for an activity or event. Contact your school Principal or Family Liaison and share your thoughts!

Resources: For a list of helpful resources as you plan your event, please see this document.

Funding: We are offering matching funds to schools who participate in having family engagement event/s during this week. Schools with more than 50 American Indian students can apply for up to $700 matching funds. Schools with less than 50 American Indian students can apply for up to $400 matching funds. We understand that this is not a large amount of funds; we encourage you to utilize Title I or other funds in an effort to offer. If desired, you can also reach out to other departments and/or community organizations for additional funding if needed. A request for funds form can be completed at this link.

Complete the event description form by the end of day November 15th.
As part of the district wide planning, we are collecting a list of events from the schools for
use in notifying our American Indian Parent Advisory Committee, families, media release,
distribution to superintendent and school board members who may attend/support events.

  • Community speakers & presentations
  • Drum groups & dance exhibitions
  • Resource Fairs
  • Native film screenings
  • Storytellers

Activity Ideas

  • Check out Minnesota Anishinaabe game featuring Minnesota Ojibwe language and culture from our department.
  • Organize a classroom activity along with a lesson. Examples include: beading workshops, moccasin making, creating tobacco pouches, dreamcatchers, etc.
