Safe Routes to School
At the heart, MPS Safe Routes to School (SRTS) strives to give all students the experience of safely, easily, (joyfully even), walking, biking, and rolling, during the school day or in the commute to and from school.
We live in one of the most walkable and bikeable cities in the entire country, and our students deserve full access. Safe Routes to School in MPS is a collaborative effort, and so we work with many local and state partners to seek resources and remove barriers so that all students experience the joys and reap the many and lifelong benefits of active transportation.
Our work is guided by our MPS Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan which expresses a belief that kids deserve to move freely in the public realm, that they should be able to travel easily and safely wherever they want to go, that joy matters, that communities matter, that there’s something each of us can do, and that when we band together we can make real, impactful change. Thousands of MPS students, families, staff, partners, and community members contributed to this update, and their collective knowledge is reflected throughout it.
