Update: Oct. 27, 2023, at 3:15 p.m.
Last night, MPS and MFT - Teacher Chapter participated in our second public bargaining session. At the last session we had an agreed upon agenda for the evening which was to include revisiting our norms, a financial presentation from the MPS bargaining team and time for the MFT Team to ask questions about the presentation.
Our financial presentation focused on the current financial reality at MPS:
- the impact declining enrollment has on our budget and the fact that there are less children residing in the City of Minneapolis
- how MPS compares to other districts in the metro and in the state as it relates to physical space, salaries, budget matters and per-pupil spending
- highlighting some challenges we are addressing including high vacancy rates that have historically been concentrated at specific schools in specific areas of the city
After the financial presentation, we went into a caucus, with plans to field questions from MFT immediately after. Instead of questions, a presentation started which was not on the agenda that both MPS & MFT agreed to. Adhering to the agreed upon agenda is important because we want to be sure that each team has time to prepare, to ensure the right people are present to respond to any questions and to ensure that we have enough time and space to dialogue. It is our hope that we can continue to collaboratively set future agendas, adhere to those agendas and follow agreed upon norms and values.
