Current MPS staff completing Master Degree research/evaluation projects should contact the REA Department before filling out an application.
Research/Evaluation Proposals will not be reviewed until all requirements are attached to the proposal and the application fee of $150 is received. Make check payable to Minneapolis Public Schools. Research Approval from the Outside Research Committee is required for any research or evaluation that involves district staff, students, facilities or functions in the collection of data from students, parents, teachers, administrators, or other professional staff.
Research conducted within MPS is governed by MPS Policy 1730 (Academic Research) and Regulation 1730A (Responsibility, Definitions and Procedures for Research Approval).
Researchers working on federally funded projects (Census, Department of Education, Workforce, etc) should reach out to the REA Department for a conversation before applying or reaching out to schools.

Application Proposal Requirements
In order for a proposal to be considered, researchers must submit a proposal, 6 pages or less, with the following outline:
- Purpose of the Research Explain the research project, the hypothesis or specific research question to be addressed. Explain how the research could benefit MPS schools, students and/or staff and which strategic initiative this research supports.
- Description of the Study what the project seeks to evaluate and how. What may be observed or assessed. Include the proposed dates and duration of the study. List the time expectations on students, staff, etc. and the schools and grades which will be included in the study.
- Data Collection and Sample Data collection methodology you will use to answer your research hypothesis. Explain the data collection methods, the sample size, and/or the data being requested from MPS Research, Evaluation and Assessments. Explain how participants will be asked to participate and how the data, and answers will be collected (survey questions, observation forms and rubrics, interview questions, assessments and scoring information).
- Data Analysis Describe the methodology you will use to analyze the data and the way in which this will address the hypothesis or research question. To assist Research, Evaluation and Assessments in evaluating items 3 and 4; all applications must include a Research Design Table with the following information: See below.

- Informed Consent (may be submitted as a separate attachment with the submission) Describe the procedures you will use to secure and acknowledge informed consent of all participants, including active or passive consent. If you are proposing to use passive consent, please provide a rationale. Expand the Informed Consent section below for more details.
- Dissemination provide a summary of your plan to share and communicate your research results. If approved it is required that results are shared with both the district sponsor, and the principals for the schools that participated. A data results summary must be sent annually (for the duration of the research) to mpsresearch@mpls.k12.mn.us
- Funding and Theoretical Background List all funding sources and budget for your study. Include at least three references and/or precedent studies explaining the existence of the research problem the proposed study attempts to address.
