My Ride K-12
New routing and GPS system coming that will streamline operations and enhance parent communication.
These new systems will be fully operational for summer school 2025. There will be a new GPS tracking app for families to track their child's yellow school bus.
In preparation, our current GPS system will be removed from yellow school buses over spring break. This means families will not be able to track GPS on yellow buses using Here Comes The Bus from March 28 to the end of the school year.
Families will be able to download the app starting April 7.
Highlights of the new technology include:
- Families will be able to track their student's yellow bus using My Ride K-12, the new GPS tracking app.
- This app tracks a student's full bus schedule including alternate pick up or drop off locations and afterschool program busing.
- Bus drivers will be able to navigate their route using live navigating instead of paper route copies.
- Enhanced safety and security features will support students' and drivers' safety on the bus.
Why Now?
We understand MPS families rely on Here Comes the Bus to track their student’s bus. Making a change in GPS systems before the end of the school year was not taken lightly.
While Here Comes the Bus won’t be accessible, families are encouraged to contact Transportation at transportation@mpls.k12.mn.us. Transportation staff can always track our buses and can answer any questions or concerns you may have, as we transition to the new system.
We have used the same routing system for over 25 years.
This system has been failing to fully meet the modern needs of our families, schools, bus drivers and transportation staff. Many workarounds have been developed over the years due to the lack of functionality in the system.
The new routing systems offer integrated GPS tracking apps for families. Modernizing our routing system means we have to change the family GPS app.
Trial period during summer school
Making such large changes in technology and new systems benefits from a trial period. Summer school was identified as the best trial period so any issues that surface can be resolved before the 25-26 school year.
In order to be prepared for the summer school trial period, we need to uninstall our current GPS system and install the new system in over 400 yellow buses. Over late winter and this spring, Transportation staff have been training in the new routing system in order to be ready to route over 4000 summer school students.
We look forward to continuing to improve the transportation experience for our students and families and thank you for your patience as we navigate this transition.
